Northey Island

๐ŸŒŠ Coast

Northey Island is a remote tidal island in the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, accessible only across a causeway at low tide and rich with a sense of solitude that is rare in the south-east. It is one of England's most important sites for overwintering wading birds and wildfowl, and the expansive salt marshes have a haunting, elemental quality. The island also holds a small but significant place in English history as the site of the Battle of Maldon in 991.

Best for birdwatchers, historians, and seekers of true Essex solitude.
